Title
A CANTERBURY TALE FROM THE
WIFE OF BATH
Playwright
ADAPTED BY HERMAN AMMANN
Synopsis

Chaucer's Wife of Bath was an expert on marriage (with five husbands?). So her tale asks, "What does a woman want most of all?" Brave Sir Gallant Dilemma must answer within 24 hours or die. Beautiful Princess Oscarina pleads for his life. A wizard named Ego (he's Super) and an ugly old crone try to help; but three ladies of the court—Lady Stumble, Lady Fumble, and Lady Bumble— can't wait to see him beheaded...they haven't had any exciting entertainment for a long time.

Herman Ammann, who has also brought to the stage The Magic Well, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and The Little Match Girl (1-act), has a knack for digging into the heart of things (like human beings) and unearthing an understanding of people which makes his characters real. Thus, his plays say something worth hearing while keeping the entertainment value high.

A delightful comedy for all groups and a contest favorite. A Director's Script (prompt book) is available from the publisher. It contains drawings of costumes and set, details on all technical aspects of staging, discussion of characterization, plot, and theme. It also suggests the complete blocking and full stage directions for all movement and business.

"My students and I have had a wonderful and rewarding time working on 'The Wife of Bath.'"—Mirando City, Texas. "Parents and students alike seemed to enjoy the performance. It gave the students a chance to really show their talents!"—Morgan Mid. School, Winchester, Va.
